Five most expensive states to own a car (and the five cheapest states)

Summer driving hazardsHow much you pay to own a car can vary greatly by state. Gas, sales tax, insurance and registration are among the costs that add up for drivers.

These costs can put a huge dent in your pocketbook. Let’s take Michigan, for instance, which has auto insurance costs on average of $2,738 per driver or Montana that has an average insurance cost of $2,297 per person.

Montana isn’t lucky when it comes to gas either. It’s not that they pay a lot for gas. In fact, they are only at $2.27, which is a bargain compared to the $2.88 average price per gallon that California drivers pay. The issue with Montana is they drive so much. Montana is the only state where the average driver racks up more than 20,000 miles per year (21,821).

Which states are the most expensive and cheapest to own a car? We dug into the data and evaluated the average costs of car ownership over five years by state, including gasoline, insurance and maintenance costs.

    Methodology

Heavy trafficWe calculated an average vehicle purchase price--basing it on the number of new versus used car purchases in 2015, and the average price of each. The following factors were evaluated to determine car ownership costs over five years, by state:

    • Gasoline – average fuel costs times average miles driven (data from Federal Highway Administration)
    • Insurance – Average auto insurance rates by state (Insurance.com)
    • Maintenance – Engine check and average repair (AAA)
    • Registration – Auto registration fees by state (The Tax Foundation)
