Know Your Coverages

Understand Ohio's Insurance Requirements

Know what's mandatory. Ohio drivers must buy Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability coverage (BI/PD) for each car they own. It pays for injuries or other damage you cause in an accident, up to the policy limit.

Optional coverages offer important protection: Uninsured and Undersinsured Motorist Bodily Injury coverage (UM/UIM) pays for injuries caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver. Uninsured Property Damage coverage (UMPD) pays for damage to your car, caused by an uninsured driver, but not a hit-and-run. Medical Payments (Med Pay) covers medical and other expenses that result from an accident. Comprehensive and Collision coverages protect your car from damage, theft or other loss that's your responsibility.

Keep Your Insurance Current

It's the law. Ohio's compulsory auto insurance law works like this. You must sign a statement that you have auto insurance when you renew your license plates each year. 5% of Ohio drivers are randomly selected to show proof of insurance by mailing a copy of their insurance ID card to the Ohio BMV. You must also show your ID card when you have an accident.

The minimum coverage for Ohio drivers is 12.5/25/7.5 which is $12,500 per injured person, up to a total of $25,000 for everyone injured in an accident, and $7,500 for property damage. If you drive without insurance, you face a license suspension for a minimum of 90 days, up to a maximum of 2 years. License plate reinstatement fees are $125 for a first offense, $300 for a second offense and $550 for a third offense.

The Minimum Is Not Enough in Ohio

Understand when to buy more coverage. Roughly 16% of Ohioans are driving without insurance and that number is on the rise.Ohio's minimum limits simply aren't enough for most drivers, in our opinion. The amount of coverage you buy should match the financial risk you face if you're responsible for an accident that's not covered by insurance. If you cause a serious accident injuring several people and the medical expenses exceed $25,000 in total, you will be personally responsible for the excess amount.
