The General

The General Logo

The General Automobile Insurance Services is widely known as The General. Its holding company is wholly owned by American Family Insurance and has been writing automobile insurance in many states for over 50 years.

The General offers auto insurance for drivers who have had a history of driving violations or accidents, have not kept their insurance in force or have less than perfect credit, and the company has a goal of offering a low down payment option to every policyholder.

American Family Insurance Group, including its The General subsidiary, claimed 1.85 percent of the private passenger auto insurance market as of June 2015, the most recent data available from data analyst A.M. Best. That makes American Family the ninth-largest auto insurance carrier among the more than 1,400 tracked by Best.

What would make The General customers switch?

We surveyed more than 4,000 auto insurance customers about how much they would need to save before switching from their insurance companies.
