Hurricanes
Q:
My home was completely destroyed in a hurricane. Will my insurance company pay my living expenses until I can rebuild?
Answer:
You'll need to check your policy. Some homeowners policies will pay for additional living expenses (e.g., food, lodging, moving, storage) that you incur while your home is being rebuilt. Keep in mind, however, that policies usually limit the length of coverage for living expenses. The amount of living expenses for which you are covered is usually limited as well (e.g., a percentage of your homeowners insurance coverage). As for how the money is dispersed, insurance company practices vary. Some companies will give you the money up front, while others will wait until after you file a claim. In any case, be sure to keep your receipts. Before it will reimburse you, your insurance company will want to see them.
