Adding a teen to your car insurance policy
Most insurance companies do not require you to add your teen to your car insurance policy when they are a certain age, only when they receive their license. On the other hand, if you are in a high-risk pool, you may be required to add them when they receive their driver`s permit. If you forget to add your licensed teen, and they are involved in a car accident, they will be covered; however, your insurance company may charge you back premiums from the date your teen received their license. For your Alabama teen to begin the process of receiving their license, they must complete the following steps:
- Obtain a Learner`s License from the Alabama DMV
- Enroll in an approved Driver`s Ed program
- Complete 30 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel instruction
- Hold Learner`s License for at least 6 months
- Apply for a Full Driver`s License
This process is for first time drivers who are at least 15 years old. To ensure that the teen driver receives ample time to practice and to offset the number of accidents that involve teen drivers each year, Alabama places restrictions on drivers with a Learner`s License:
Learner`s License
Drivers who are 15 years old must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or driver age 21 or older with the licensed occupant sitting next to driver in front seat. Drivers who are 16 and 17 years old and holding a license less than six months cannot operate a vehicle between midnight and 6 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed adult, are going to or from work, school or a religious sponsored event, or are driving due to an emergency. Additionally, there should be no more than four occupants in the vehicle, excluding the supervising parent.
Full Driving Privileges A person under the age of 18 cannot apply for an unrestricted license until he or she has held a Learner`s License for at least six months and completed a minimum of 30 hours behind-the-wheel training through an approved driver education program.
