Insurance.com is designed to let you customize the way you learn about insurance, compare quotes and buy a policy whenever you’re ready. If you really don’t want to talk to an agent, you can do everything online: research coverage options, learn about the companies we represent, complete an application, compare rates and payment options, buy a policy and get immediate proof of insurance.
Often, our customers will start their research online and then call us to speak with a licensed agent, who will happily complete your application for you or just discuss your choice of carriers and coverage. When you’re ready to buy, you can retrieve your quote and pay online or ask your agent about how to make your down payment by phone. There’s nothing to mail and no driving involved.
How Insurance.com Makes Money
We get paid when you buy a policy. But, we’re not in a hurry and don’t want you to be either. We provide comparison quotes for you directly from top car insurance companies - and that service is free. You can change your information as much as you like and get as many new quotes as you wish. If you buy a policy from our agency online or by phone, we’re paid a commission by the insurance company you select. (There are no extra costs or fees.) When you ask for a quote for home, life and health insurance, we earn a small referral fee, but not a commission, because we aren’t licensed to sell those policies yet.
Our History
Insurance.com was founded in June of 2000, as ComparisonMarket, Inc. With support from some of the top insurance providers in the country, such as The Hartford, Liberty Mutual, Progressive and Travelers, we were quoting in 45 states by November of 2001. ComparisonMarket, Inc. acquired the Insurance.com Agency and domain name in July of 2003, and quickly put the strong brand name to work. By July of 2004 we had sold over 100,000 policies and by 2007, we had sold over 700,000 auto insurance policies.
