A Florida policy is mandatory. If you move to Florida from another state, you cannot keep your current auto insurance policy. You must buy a Florida policy with the minimum allowable coverage by law from an agent or insurance company licensed to sell or issue policies in Florida.
Snowbird alert. If you live in Florida for part of the year and keep a car in storage while you're away, and the car has a Florida tag and registration, you must keep your auto insurance coverage current. Or, you can surrender your tag and registration for the time that you're away - and than re-register your car and shop for a new policy when you return.
It's the law. If you are caught driving without insurance, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles can suspend your driving privileges, including your tags and registration. The suspension lasts for up to three years or until you prove that you have a Florida policy. But that's not all. You'll also pay a $150 to $500 reinstatement fee.
Know what's required and what you need. Florida law requires drivers to purchase Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL). PIP covers medical expenses, as well as lost wages and other damages, without regard to faul, although not in all cases. PDL covers another driver's vehicle or property when you're at fault for an accident.
If you own a home, the minimum auto insurance coverage in Florida may not be enough protection. If the other driver sues to recoup damages, you could be personally laible and lose your house or other assets.
