Know what's mandatory. In Pennsylvania, mandatory coverage includes Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability coverage (BI/PD), and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage.
You must also choose either full or limited tort coverage. Full tort coverage allows you to sue a driver who injures you or your passengers, without limitations on the extent of injury. Limited tort coverage is less expensive and allows you to recover out-of-pocket medical and other expenses. But there's no payment for pain and suffering, unless your injuries cross a certain threshold determined by state law.
Optional coverages offer important protection. 14 percent of PA drivers drive without insurance, so we recommend you always buy UM/UIM coverage. Uninsured and Undersinsured Motorist Bodily Injury coverage (UM/UIM) pays for injuries caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver. Uninsured Motorist Property Damage coverage (UMPD) pays for damage to your car, caused by an uninsured driver, if you don't have Collision coverage.
Medical Payments coverage pays for medical and other expenses from an accident regardless of fault. Comprehensive and Collision coverages protect your car from damage, theft or other loss that's not caused by another driver. Higher deductibles can save you money.
