It ranked third overall on our Best Car Insurance Companies list for 2026 and boasts the lowest premiums of all ranked companies.

It doesn’t offer as many discounts as some of its peers, but base rates are low enough that it might not matter. It also rated above average in customer satisfaction and has fewer complaints filed with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) than expected for a company of its size.

How does Nationwide insurance rank?

Nationwide ranked third overall in our 2026 car insurance company ranking. Rates are below average at $205 a month, but credit rating agency AM Best did not rate its financial stability as highly as some of its top competitors. Still, with an A rating, it’s on solid financial ground.

The company performed well in several areas of the  2025 J.D. Power auto insurance surveys. Nationwide finished among the top choices overall in our ranking.

Average full coverage rates for a 40-year-old driver with Nationwide are $2,463 per year or $205 per month. State Farm and Allstate came in below Nationwide at $2,874 a year and  $3,205 a year, respectively.

At age 25, the average cost of insurance with Nationwide is $2,966 for a male and $2,794 for a female. That drops by age 40 to $2,475 a year for a male and $2,451 for a female.

While rates can vary slightly by insurance company, adults will pay some of their lowest rates around the age of 60-65. With Nationwide, rates are lowest around age 60 and then start to increase again.

Drivers who cause an accident usually pay about 40% more for car insurance than drivers with a clean record. This is the largest increase compared to other driving violations.

Insurers are very good at crunching vast amounts of data to get accurate risk profiles of drivers. Why did Nationwide nonrenew my car insurance?

If you have received a nonrenewal notice from Nationwide, call the company and ask for the reason. There are a number of reasons an insurance company might decide not to renew a car insurance policy, but the main reason is a change in risk. That risk may be directly related to you as a driver or your household, or it may be regional. When risk increases in a certain region, companies may decide to reduce their exposure in that area by nonrenewing policies.

Why did my Nationwide insurance rate go up?

There are a lot of reasons for car insurance rates to increase. It may be related to changes in your risk profile, or it may be a general rate increase across the board. In recent years, car insurance rates have jumped nationwide in response to increased claim costs due to inflation, increases in the cost of parts and labor and increases in severe weather.

Is Nationwide a good insurance company?

In our survey, customers gave Nationwide better than average marks for customer satisfaction and consumer research firm J.D. Power rated it just slightly below average for auto claims satisfaction. 

Of course, if you check online forums, you will see plenty of tales from drivers who say Nationwide was not on their side in resolving a claim. However, the same can be said for most of the major carriers as people are more apt to post their negative experiences.

We partnered with Quadrant Information Services to field car insurance rates across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. National and state average rates are based on three coverage levels: state minimum, 50/100/50 liability-only, and full coverage with 100/300/100 liability and $500 deductibles. 

Unless otherwise indicated, averages are based on our full coverage data set. This data set is based on:

  • Bodily injury liability of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per incident
  • Property damage liability of $100,000 per incident
  • Comprehensive and collision deductibles of $500
  • 40-year-old driver
  • Honda Accord LX
  • Good credit
  • A clean driving record
  • 12-mile commute, 10,000 annual mileage

Additional rate data is drawn based on:

  • Ages ranging from 16 to 75
  • Excellent, fair and poor credit
  • All available traffic violations
  • One or more at-fault accidents
