How much is car insurance in Louisiana?
The average cost of car insurance in Louisiana is $2,883 annually for full coverage. However, these rates vary considerably based on factors like age, coverage levels, driving record and the make and model of the vehicle.
For example, younger drivers and males pay higher insurance rates, as do drivers with poor driving records.
In May of 2025, Louisiana enacted House Bill 148, which gives the state Insurance Commissioner the power to reject proposed auto insurance rate hikes by companies if they determine “...that the rate is excessive, inadequate, or unfairly discriminatory.” Excessive rates are defined by the bill as rate hikes that would produce a profit, “...that is unreasonably high for the insurance provided or the expense provision included therein is unreasonably high in relation to the services rendered.”
While this may mean lower rates for drivers, experts have some concerns.
“With the exception of HB 148, the bills signed into law today are significant steps that Louisiana has taken toward achieving meaningful legal reform. Many additional bills that need to pass are still making their way through the legislative process, so we have a long way to go over the next two weeks if we want to fully address the cost drivers behind our unaffordable auto insurance premiums this session. At the same time, passing HB 148 was a mistake that destabilizes our market and threatens to neutralize—if not outright reverse—the progress we’re making on fixing the homeowners and auto insurance crisis in Louisiana,” says Louisiana Department of Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple.
Louisiana drivers who only want to carry the minimum car insurance can expect to pay an average of $722. However, collision and comprehensive coverages aren't included, so any damage to your vehicle in an at-fault accident would be paid out of pocket.
"While most of us are reviewing our household budgets to see where we may be able to cut corners, your car insurance policy shouldn't be one of them. If you are considering saving money buying a liability-only auto insurance policy, the minimum legal coverage in most states, think first about what it will cost you when you need to file a claimAn insurance claim is a request you make to your insurance company for coverage after your car is damaged or you have an accident. You can file a claim online, by phone, or in writing. for any injuries or damage to your vehicle other than those of the other victims when you cause a crash," says Carole Walker, executive director of the Rocky Mountain Insurance Association, a nonprofit consumer insurance information organization.
