Our thoughts on Allstate

Allstate is one of the largest home insurers in the nation and a well-known name many people trust. Like any big company, complaints are not uncommon, but our survey of homeowners found most are satisfied with the service they receive. Allstate did rank a little below average in J.D. Power’s claims survey.

Allstate home insurance rates are low compared to major competitors, and the many available discounts can bring rates down even more.

“Larger size often allows [major companies] to provide a diverse range of discounts, potentially leading to savings,”  says Siwei Gao, professor of insurance studies at Eastern Kentucky University.

Allstate’s discounts list is even more extensive than that of other major companies, offering a lot of ways to save. Allstate works with captive agents, which means the agent works solely for Allstate; although you must select an agent, you can conduct most insurance business online or with the app.

Overall: While Allstate home insurance reviews from customers online are mixed, our ranking placed Allstate in fifth place on our best home insurance companies list of 2024. It’s a solid choice with cheap rates.

What do people ask about Allstate?

Below, we’ve answered some questions about home insurance with Allstate.

How does Allstate home insurance rank?

Allstate ranks at No. 4 in our 2023 home insurance list. There are a lot of ways to rank homeowners insurance companies, but Allstate usually earns relatively good scores from most rating systems.

What is Allstate Claim RateGuard?

Allstate Claim RateGuard is an addition to your homeowners insurance policy that promises that your rates won’t go up just because you file a claim. It applies to one claim every five years; more than one claim may still result in an increase. It’s part of the Allstate Enhanced package for homeowners insurance, which has an added cost.

How do Allstate claim-free rewards and deductible rewards work?

Allstate claim-free rewards give you 5% back every year you don’t file a claim. Allstate deductible rewards reduce your deductible by $100 every year you don’t file a claim, up to $500. Both are part of the Allstate Enhanced package.

Can you buy Allstate home insurance through a broker?

Allstate policies are sold solely through agents who work directly for Allstate. You can, however, complete an Allstate home insurance quote online and then, in most cases, buy the policy online as well.

Is Allstate a good homeowners insurance company?

Allstate reviews can be confusing; like most homeowners insurance companies, there are plenty of anecdotal stories of problems with Allstate, including issues with Allstate home insurance claims. For the most part, however, Allstate performed well in our home insurance survey.

Do people trust Allstate?

In our survey, 74% of Allstate customers said they trust the company. That wasn’t as high as some competitors, but not far behind either. American Family topped the list at 83%.

Do people recommend Allstate?

A solid 84% of Allstate customers said they’d recommend the company to others. That wasn’t the highest rate; Erie ranked first with 95%.

Do people plan to renew with Allstate?

When asked if they plan to renew with Allstate, 89% of customers said yes. Erie again topped the ranking with 97%. Most companies performed well in this category.

Is Allstate good at paying claims?

Allstate earned a below-average 868 out of 1,000 on J.D. Power’s 2023 Property Claims Satisfaction survey. The industry average was 874.

Most home insurance companies have some negative reviews out there when it comes to claims; Allstate is no different. Its below-average rating in J.D. Power’s study doesn’t mean the company won’t pay your claim, however.
