Progressive auto insurance: Overall verdict

Progressive is the second-largest car insurance provider in the country, falling only behind State Farm for total premiums written. Working with an insurer of Progressive’s size has advantages. For one, it’s an option for drivers in all 50 states, and for another, it has the financial footing to invest in the latest online applications and ways to service customers.

However, working with a big insurer can have its downsides. Progressive scored about average for customer service in our ranking of the Best Car Insurance Companies for 2026, and its premiums are not the cheapest. 

The company offers numerous discounts for bundling, installing safety features, and professional affiliations and has a rock-solid credit rating.

How does Progressive insurance rank?

Progressive ranked fourth overall in our 2026 ranking of the top car insurance providers. It scored about average for customer satisfaction and has a top credit rating, but its premiums are on the more expensive side.

Although the company did not rank in the top half of the 2025 J.D. Power auto claims customer satisfaction survey, with a score below the average of 645, it finished among the top choices overall in our ranking, largely due to its low complaint volume.

How much is Progressive car insurance?

The average full coverage rate for a 40-year-old driver with Progressive is $2,675 per year or $223 per month. That’s higher than Nationwide at only $2,463 a year, but still lower than $3,205 per year at Allstate.

Progressive does offer a wide range of discounts and an innovative “Name Your Price” tool that helps drivers find coverage within their budget. However, in terms of basic rates, Progressive’s premiums are on the more expensive side. It’s a little more expensive than top competitors State Farm and GEICO.

We partnered with Quadrant Information Services to field car insurance rates across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. National and state average rates are based on three coverage levels: state minimum, 50/100/50 liability-only, and full coverage with 100/300/100 liability and $500 deductibles. 

Unless otherwise indicated, averages are based on our full coverage data set. This data set is based on:

  • Bodily injury liability of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per incident
  • Property damage liability of $100,000 per incident
  • Comprehensive and collision deductibles of $500
  • 40-year-old driver
  • Honda Accord LX
  • Good credit
  • A clean driving record
  • 12-mile commute, 10,000 annual mileage

Additional rate data is drawn based on:

  • Ages ranging from 16 to 75
  • Excellent, fair and poor credit
  • All available traffic violations
  • One or more at-fault accidents
