Which home insurance companies deny the most claims?
A recent study by Weiss Ratings found that Farmers, USAA and Allstate have the highest rate of claim denials.
Each insurer has its own claims process that customers must adhere to. This process typically involves filing a claim, providing necessary documentation, and possibly meeting with an adjuster. Because of this, there are numerous reasons why your insurer may deny the claim.
Reasons your homeowners insurance company may deny your claim include:
- The damage isn’t covered. For example, if a flood damages your home, your claim will be denied because home insurance doesn’t cover floods. That requires separate flood insurance.
- Missing documentation. Your insurer requires specific items to complete your claim, such as pictures, claims form, police report, and receipts. Not having the proper documentation can slow or stop the claims process.
- Missed deadlines. Missing a deadline can lead to a denied or delayed claim.
- Negligence. If you intentionally caused the damage or didn’t do the necessary repairs to keep your property from being damaged, your claim can be denied.
- High deductible. If the damages are less than your deductible, the amount you must pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in, the insurer will deny the claim.
This table shows the percentage of claims denied among top home insurance companies, based on the Weiss study.
Homeowners insurance companies | Average of claims closed without payment (%) |
---|---|
Allstate | 39.50% |
American Family | 34.30% |
Amica Mutual | 29.50% |
Auto-Owners | 16.70% |
Erie Insurance | 16.70% |
Farmers | 48.00% |
Nationwide | 15.90% |
Progressive | 28.30% |
State Farm | 37.40% |
Travelers | 6.20% |
USAA | 48.10% |
Keep in mind that an insurer can legitimately deny claims for numerous reasons. If you feel your insurer incorrectly denied your claim, you can file an appeal with the carrier.
What makes a home insurance company good for claims?
A good claims experience can make life much more manageable after your home suffers damage. But what makes the claims process better for consumers? Responsiveness, consistency, efficiency and a fair settlement offer.
An insurer that responds quickly to your questions and concerns about the claims process helps make the experience easy. Getting consistent answers to your questions, regardless of who you talk to, is also important.
Whether you’re waiting on your claims settlement or a reimbursement, how quickly your insurer responds to a claim makes a huge difference. Delayed communication leads to headaches and missed deadlines. With repair times taking longer than ever, homeowners want the claims process to move as quickly as possible to regain the use of their homes.
Repair costs have also increased significantly. Homeowners want insurers to resolve the claim and make a fair settlement quickly. Insurers understand that labor and material costs have risen and should reflect those costs in a settlement.

Methodology
In late 2024, our sister site Insure.com surveyed more than 1,750 insurance consumers (1,011 people with home insurance). The survey was conducted by online market research company Slice MR.
Among the questions, customers were asked to rate their satisfaction with the claims process offered by their insurance company. Ratings were from 1 (very unsatisfied) to 5 (very satisfied), with the number of responses at a 4 (satisfied) or a 5 used to calculate the percentage of satisfied customers.
