What can I do to get cheaper home insurance in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma is among the most expensive states for home insurance, but there are ways to save. In addition to shopping around and asking about discounts, legislators are finding ways to reduce costs.

The Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) has announced a pilot launch of its OKReady program to give out 100 grants of up to $10,000 per household to help Oklahoma residents strengthen their roofs. The grants can only be used for upgrading roofs to meet the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) FORTIFIED Home – Roof™ – High Wind designation with the Hail Supplement. The funds will be paid to the contractor only after the roof earns the IBHS FORTIFIED Certification. While this initial pilot is limited to 100 grants in eight ZIP codes OID hopes to expand its range and award up to 1,000 grants by the end of 2025.

Homes in the following ZIP codes will be eligible for the grants:

  • 73049
  • 73051
  • 73065
  • 73069
  • 73111
  • 73127
  • 73129
  • 73135

These upgrades can earn homeowners a discount on their home insurance.
